Use advice for data set The data set represents a cradle to gate inventory for aluminium profiles from primary aluminium. It does not represent the typical consumer mix of aluminium profiles in Malaysia due to fact that also profiles from secondary aluminium are produced. Considering the used technologies in this data set the environmental profile is applicable but with the background of the consumer market and to achieve decisions it should be treated with care because the aluminium products from secondary aluminium would have a much lower environmental impact and might change the decision process.
Technical purpose of product or process Aluminium profiles are used as structural components in many sectors like in building (window frames, balcony, scaffolding, etc.), in transportation (BIW, bumpers, seat frames, etc.) or in engineering.

General comment on data set The data set covers all relevant process steps / technologies over the supply chain of the represented cradle to gate inventory with a good overall data quality. The inventory is mainly based on industry data and is completed, where necessary, by secondary data. Within this data set 100% primary aluminium is used to produce the aluminium products.

Technology description including background system Aluminium profiles are produced in an extrusion process from aluminium ingots. The ingots are heated up to 500°C and pressed through dies. The aluminium ingots (in this data set 100% primary aluminium) are produced in cast houses). The production of the primary aluminium comprises the steps bauxite mining, alumina production and aluminium production by electrolysis. For more information see the EEA environmental profile report. For the primary aluminium a global mix was used with the following provenance share: Africa 7.5%, North America 22.9%, Latin America 10.2%, Asia 13.4%, Europe 36.4%, Oceania 9.6%. The provision with electricity for the electrolysis process is modeled according to the used energy carriers in the different production regions. An average transport distance of 12,700 km was adjusted for the transport between the different production regions and Malaysia. The background system is addressed as follows:    Electricity, Thermal energy: The electricity (and thermal energy as by-product) used is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation. The country-specific modelling is achieved on multiple levels. Firstly the individual power plants in service are modelled according to the current national grid. This includes net losses and imported electricity. Second, the national emission and efficiency standards of the power plants are modelled. Third, the country-specific fuel supply (share of resources used, by import and / or domestic supply) including the country-specific properties (e.g. element and energy contents) are accounted for. Fourth, the import, transport, mining and exploration processes for the energy carrier supply chain are modelled according to the specific situation of each power-producing country. The different mining and exploration techniques (emissions and efficiencies) in the different exploration countries are accounted for according to current engineering knowledge and information.    Transports: All relevant and known transport processes used are included. Overseas transport including rail and truck transport to and from major ports for imported bulk resources are included. Furthermore all relevant and known pipeline and / or tanker transport of gases and oil imports are included.     Energy carriers: Coal, crude oil, natural gas and uranium are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity).    Refinery products: Diesel, gasoline, technical gases, fuel oils, basic oils and residues such as bitumen are modelled via a country-specific, refinery parameterized model. The refinery model represents the current national standard in refinery techniques (e.g. emission level, internal energy consumption,...) as well as the individual country-specific product output spectrum, which can be quite different from country to country. Hence the refinery products used show the individual country-specific use of resources. The supply of crude oil is modelled, again, according to the country-specific crude oil situation with the respective properties of the resources.

  • Allocation - mass
  • Allocation - market value
  • Allocation - net calorific value
  • Allocation - exergetic content
Deviations from LCI method approaches / explanations For the combined heat and power production, allocation by exergetic content is applied. For the electricity generation and by-products, e.g. gypsum, allocation by market value is applied due to no common physical properties. Within the refinery allocation by net calorific value and mass is used. For the combined crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids production allocation by net calorific value is applied.
Modelling constants All data used in the calculation of the LCI results refer to net calorific value.
Deviation from modelling constants / explanations None

Data sources, treatment and representativeness
Data cut-off and completeness principles Cut-off rules for each unit process: Coverage of at least 95 % of mass and energy of the input and output flows, and 98 % of their environmental relevance (according to expert judgement).
Deviation from data cut-off and completeness principles / explanations None
Data selection and combination principles The data sources for the complete product system are sufficiently constant. Data for energy, intermediates and auxiliary consumption are based on measured operating data from literature and other literature data.
Deviation from data selection and combination principles / explanations None
Data treatment and extrapolations principles Malaysian conditions for power and thermal energy supply were used based on statistics and technology specific data to represent the specific country conditions. Consumption data (energy and materials) of the production mixes are based on technology specific documents representing a global average or European conditions. For the production of intermediates the same principles were applied.
Deviation from data treatment and extrapolations principles / explanations None
