General comment on data set LCI data for printing ink is based on published information and modelled for a non site specific plant. The electricity used is modelled according to the current national grid including the country-specific properties (e.g. element and energy contents). Overseas transport including rail and truck transport to and from major ports for imported bulk resources and packaging of the finish product are excluded.

Technological representativeness
Technology description including background system Common printing inks consist of carbon black as pigment, resin modified with phenols as hard resin (binder) and mineral oil are mixed in a mixer. Mineral oil/solvent is used as carrier phase to increase the viscosity of the printing ink. The manufacturing process typicaly involves heating to allow for rapid solutioning. The temperature involved in the process may vary with range from120 degrees Celsius to 260 degrees Celsius. Cooking times may range from a few minutes to several hours. The cooking process continues until the reactants achieved adequtate solubility in the solvent. Additives are added and followed by final mixing to obtain the target properties. The finished product will be stored before the packaging process.

Data sources, treatment and representativeness
Data cut-off and completeness principles Modelling is based on published information with no details on cut-off rules for each unit process. The principles of data treatment in accordance to ISO 14044 should have been addressed by the author of the publication.
Deviation from data cut-off and completeness principles / explanations None
Data selection and combination principles The data sources for the complete product system are sufficiently consistent.
Deviation from data selection and combination principles / explanations None
Data treatment and extrapolations principles Malaysian conditions for power and thermal energy supply were used based on statistics and technology specific data to represent the specific country conditions. Consumption data (energy and materials) of the production mix are based on technology specific documents representing region specific or global average where relevant. For the production of intermediates the same principles were applied.

Access and use restrictions Access to datasets is permitted upon approval by the authorised administrator of the Malaysian Life Cycle Inventory Database. The standard route to the datasets is via online enquiry and deliver of hardcopies of the datasets through normal mail. When special access is granted, the dataset can be used by the user to perform LCA studies, to convert into other formats, to develop own datasets etc., as long as the copyright and license conditions for the datsets of the MYLCID are met. Please note e.g that reference must be given to the "Owner of dataset" and to the "Malaysian Life Cycle Inventory Database" plus version number, when using the dataset or parts thereof. Please note also, that any modifications/omissions of the dataset results in invalidity of any existing'official approval of datset by producer/operator', that the impression must be avoided that this would still be a complete dataset of the MYLCID, and that the content of further fields has to be adjusted.
The access to the data set is restricted to metadata only. Ask the provider to get full access to the data set.
